Kitten New York Espresso

Our Coffees

Kitten Coffee uses only single origin microlot coffees from Brazil. We have found that with the right roast profile we can bring out enough subtle flavor complexity to deliver a consistently, rather special, coffee. Below are profiles of the growers and their coffees that we are currently lucky enough to source green bean from.

FIORAVANTI MALAGUTTI

In a small farm in São Sebastião da Grama, SP, Fioravanti Malagutti picks coffee beans as precious as his love of working the land. In the first half of the 20th century, Fioravanti’s father worked for an old coffee farm. After leaving that farm he bought Sítio São Paulo and started planting potatoes, having with him the stories and knowledge from his previous job. In 1953 he passed away and Fioravanti took over the property. Everything went well until 1967, when their business was in a slump and the Malaguttis needed to find alternatives. It was a time full of uncertainties: “We had been planting potatoes for twenty years and then we couldn’t plant or eat”. Fate was about to set the Malaguttis on the path to coffee growing again. Noticing that coffee plants grew vigorously in a neighboring farm, Fioravanti decided to give it a shot. Like someone who asks his neighbor for sugar, he asked for some seeds and got 3L of it. He remembers the beginning and the first results: “We started to plant and prepare the land. It was as if I was taking care of a newborn baby. And it worked out”. Fioravanti admits that it was only recently that he discovered that his soil is so good to produce quality coffees. The humble, polite producer is extremely dedicated, so he worked hard without knowing how valuable the coffee he was growing was. He says that “we worked hard, and we are happy with the results. We fight a lot not to lose quality. I’m glad we can do that”, says the proud producer. Today Fioravanti hopes the new generations carry on with the love for the land. “I used to call the whole family to plant coffee. Everybody worked. I have a 12-year-old grandson. I hope he likes it all”.

Sítio São Paulo, in São Sebastião da Grama, is a small property in São Paulo. The coffee trees are 1200m above sea level and Mr. Malagutti is very proud of them. Sítio São Paulo’s coffee has a unique taste, thanks to the way the producer handles each coffee tree.

JOSÉ MALAGUTTI

In the Fazenda Santa Luzia, coffee is more than a business: it is the result of the work and dedication of a family. Located in São Sebastião da Grama, São Paulo, the farm has had a history of growing coffee for over 40 years. The strong relationship with coffee beans began when José Malagutti and his two brothers saw in the quality of the soil of the region an opportunity to change their lives. After gaining experience through hard work, José and his brothers discovered the best way to grow coffee, always aiming for the best flavor. Today they grow a special coffee, of the Mundo Novo variety, which carries the distinctive flavor of the region. The history of the family's success motivates him to pursue a better future. For this reason, Joseph has high expectations for this year. He intends to invest in machinery and in education for his family so that they can continue the work in the farm. "With hard work and effort we will achieve great results" he says.
